Velvet Rope

How to play

Tonight there's a secret door rule. It's about meaning or vibe, never spelling, and it reads like one of these:

  • “Has a tail”
  • “Found at a campsite”
  • “Belongs in a circus”
  • “Feels cold”

Work out tonight's from who the bouncer lets in.

  1. Send guests to the door. Type a word or short phrase. The bouncer lets them ✓ IN or sends them ✗ OUT. You have 10 spots on the list, and two guests are already on it to get you started. Begin with guests like the one already inside, then test the edges with ones you're not sure about: that's how you find where the line is.
  2. Getting carded. ? CARDED means he can't tell if they belong inside or out. Your first 2 cards are comped: free, and you get the guest back to add detail (“bank” → “bank vault”).
  3. Name the rule whenever you've cracked it, in your own words. It doesn't have to match ours: the bouncer tries your wording on 12 hidden guests, 6 in and 6 out, and you're on the list if it sorts at least 5 of each side the same way. You get 2 guesses.

Example night

Say the secret rule is “feels cold”. A player's list might go like this, and either guess would win:

  1. snowmanalready inside✓ IN
  2. campfirejust bounced✗ OUT
  3. ice cube✓ IN
  4. watercomped: add detail? CARDED
  5. glass of ice water✓ IN
  6. sun✗ OUT
  • “cold things”

    IN 6/6 · OUT 6/6 🎟️ On the list

  • “stuff that feels chilly”

    IN 6/6 · OUT 5/6 🎟️ On the list

Two different wordings, one idea: both get on the list. You don't need our exact words, just the same line between in and out. “Winter stuff” would have missed: an ice cube feels cold without being wintry.

Cracked the door rule? Say it in your own words, like “feels cold” or “belongs in a kitchen”. It doesn't have to match ours: close enough wins.
